  1. Hi there,
I am so inspired by your `Fake Cakes’ – as I am in the process of designing and developing a HUGE chocolate cake for a production in Melbourne, Australia. I was hoping to get some feedback about using foam rubber as opposed to styrofoam. Has your your `Fake Cake’ designer ever used foam rubber? And what has been the result?
Hoping to hear from you soon
    Warm regards

    • Hi Nicola!
Thanks so much! I am the one who made the cake (Emily Dix, Artistic Director). The styrofoam that I used was the type you get at a hardware store, the firmly packed type you see for insulation type things. Not the type that is made out of little balls, as that tends to crumble. From what I’ve seen, foam rubber seems to be similar, in that it is one solid piece, as opposed to be a bunch of smaller “particles” stuck together. I think as long as you make sure that’s the case, it should be fine. You want something that can be cut and shaped without falling apart. Also, remember to spray the whole thing with something like Super 77 to give it a primed surface. I don’t have a ton of experience with these though, so I would recommend writing to the lady who does the Fake ‘n Bake site, as she is much more of an expert! Hope that helps, and please share a pic of your creation when it’s done!
