WHAT: Careers in the Arts Workshop

WHEN: Saturday October 23, 2-4pm ET

WHERE: Online

HOW MUCH: $20 CAD (payable via PayPal or e-transfer)

WHAT’S NEEDED: Access to a computer with a steady internet connection, a computer with a working speaker and either a microphone or the ability to type.

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: Interested in working in the arts, but don’t know where to start? This unique workshop will provide students with a realistic view into the arts world, guiding them through a host of career paths and the steps to follow to get there. Bygone Artistic Executive Director Emily Dix will cover topics such as;

  • Post-secondary programs here and abroad
  • Skill building without formal education
  • Unconventional arts related careers
  • How to network in the arts
  • How to build a resume or portfolio, and more.

WHO IT’S FOR: This course has been designed for Ontario senior high school students but is appropriate for recent graduates as well. Best suited for those living in the GTA. Recommended for people aged 17-20, however there is no age cut-off.

ACCESSIBILITY: Auto-captioning is provided through the program, however it is not always the most accurate. This unique workshop will provide students with a realistic view into the arts world, guiding them through a host of career paths and the steps to follow to get there. Bygone Artistic Executive Director Emily Dix will cover topics such as;

  • Post-secondary programs here and abroad
  • Skill building without formal education
  • Unconventional arts related careers
  • How to network in the arts
  • How to build a resume or portfolio, and more.

This workshop can benefit not only arts students, but any senior high school students who are considering future career paths. Also available as a large-scale presentation for an entire grade or school; contact us for pricing. 

The Audition Process:

There’s so much more to auditioning than what happens in the audition room, and how you prepare is just as important as how well you perform. Director Emily Dix will walk students through all the key aspects of the audition process, including;

  • Where to find auditions
  • How to get an agent
  • How to pick a monologue
  • How to format a performance resume
  • What to look for in a headshot
  • How to build your “brand” online
  • Audition etiquette, and more. 

Something From Nothing: How To Produce Your First Show:

Recommended for senior high school students, this workshop is a crash-course in indie theatre producing. Topics include:

  • Picking the right show
  • Casting
  • Creating a budget
  • Dealing with venues
  • Raising funds
  • Marketing, and more.

Cast Spotlight: Abby Strachan

1.Tell us a bit about yourself, what do you do when you’re not rehearsing for Wait Until Dark?

I recently turned fifteen and am in grade nine. At my high school I major in Drama as well as taking Advanced Placement courses in order to challenge myself academically. I love to read and write poems and stories. I’ve been dancing since I was 4 and that’s when I really found my love of performing. I’ve also been teaching dance to younger dancers since I was twelve and I love babysitting and working with kids.

2.How did you hear about the show? What made you want to get involved?

I heard about the show through mandy.com and I wanted to be involved because I love theatre and I think that the concept of Wait Until Dark is so cool because the main character is a blind woman who saves herself.

3.What has been your favourite moment in rehearsal so far?

For me this show’s been great because I’ve learned so much from the people around me. Everyone is very talented and I’ve learned a lot about acting and the industry.

4.How do you prepare for playing a role like Gloria?

In order to prepare for Gloria, I really just spent a lot of time trying to understand her choices and her thought process. Gloria as a character is pretty sad because she has such a tough home life and even though she acts really tough (and mean sometimes) she’s really just a little kid.

5.Why should everyone come see the show?

Everyone should come see Wait Until Dark because it’s very unique considering the time it was written in. In this day in age everyone’s talking more and more about female empowerment, and I believe that this play demonstrates a strong female lead. It’s also a really fun thriller!

6. Anything else you want to add? 

Thanks to my family especially my mom for getting me to and from rehearsals and to my friends in drama at school for being so supportive.

CREW CALL – Assistant & Volunteer Positions

Bygone Theatre is currently looking to fill several paid and volunteer positions for our upcoming productions. We have roles available for both experienced arts workers and for those interested in getting their feet wet; high school students may apply for some of these. Check out the details below, and contact Executive Director Emily Dix at emily@bygonetheatre.com with any questions.

Want to get involved but don’t see something that quite fits? Give us a shout, we are always happy to meet with new people and find ways to involve those who are interested.

The following positions are open for those looking to gain experience working in theatre, or for those who just like to be involved. Potential roles include;

  • Assistant stage manager
  • Assistant set designer
  • Production assistant
  • Marketing & social media assistant

These roles are open to those with little to no previous experience, including high school students. Students may fulfill their requisite 40 volunteer hours with these positions. Children under 18 will need to provide a signed parent permission form.

How to Apply:
Send a one-page cover letter to Emily Dix at emily@bygonetheatre.com, outlining any relevant skills or experience and describing how you would like to be involved, and what you would like to gain from the position.

 

Deadline for crew calls is February 1, 2016 at 5:00pm. Applications will be reviewed as they are received and an appropriate candidate may be accepted before the deadline; early applications are encouraged.

Volunteer Position: Student Promotions and Social Media Intern

Bygone Theatre is looking for our next intern as part of our Youth Outreach initiative! Janice Li was our most recent volunteer, working as a Production Assistant; she worked on “Dial M For Murder” as an Assistant Stage Manager and helped build the set, creating our fabulous brick wall all by herself!

Right now we’re in-between shows, so we’re looking for someone to help with more general company stuff, especially with promotions and expanding our social media presence. The ideal candidate will be:

  1. A Toronto high school student
  2. Interested in and passionate about theatre and the arts
  3. knowledgable of social media platforms (ie. facebook, twitter, instagram, youtube, wordpress, pinterest etc)
  4. Reliable and responsible
  5. Full of energy with a positive attitude and willingness to learn

What is key here is not so much experience as attitude; we are happy to share anything we know and hopefully you can teach us some things too!

While hours are extremely flexible, we do require a time commitment of a minimum of 3 months, as responsibilities will include maintaining (and possibly creating) social media accounts leading up until at least our November fundraiser.

We are open to adjusting the position to suit the students interests and needs; production based positions will be available closer to our next show, and students who assist out in other areas before then will be given preference.

This is a non-paying position, and a great way to earn your volunteer hours! Students who complete their tasks competently are welcome to use us as references or ask for a formal reference letter.
